Smoky Chipotle Burger Patties

Jump to Recipe

These smoky chipotle burger patties are everything you want from a homemade burger — juicy, boldly seasoned, and packed with deep, smoky heat from chipotle chiles in adobo. Whether you’re firing up the grill for a summer cookout or just craving a serious burger on a weeknight, this recipe delivers restaurant-quality results at home.

The secret is the seasoning blend. Ground beef gets mixed with chipotle peppers, smoked paprika, cumin, and a touch of brown sugar that caramelises beautifully on the grill. Add the lime juice and you’ve got patties with genuine depth of flavour — smoky, spicy, tangy, and just a little sweet.

Why You’ll Love These Burger Patties

  • Huge, bold flavour — smoky chipotle heat in every bite
  • Juicy every time — the right fat content and technique keeps them moist
  • Ready in 30 minutes — fast enough for a weeknight dinner
  • Works on grill or stovetop — versatile in any kitchen

Ingredients & Substitutions

Ground beef: Use 80/20 (80% lean, 20% fat) ground beef. The fat is essential for juiciness and flavour — don’t try to make these with lean ground beef or they’ll dry out on the grill.

Chipotle chiles in adobo: Find these in a small tin in the Mexican food section of most supermarkets. You only need a couple of peppers plus a spoonful of the sauce. They’re smoky, spicy, and deeply savoury — absolutely essential for these patties.

Panko breadcrumbs: These act as a binder and help retain moisture. You can substitute regular breadcrumbs or even rolled oats in a pinch.

Smoked paprika: This amplifies the smokiness. Regular sweet paprika will also work but won’t give quite the same depth.

Tips for Perfect Burger Patties

Don’t over-mix. Mix the ingredients just until combined — working the meat too much activates the proteins and leads to dense, tough patties. Use your hands gently.

Make a thumb indent. Press a small indent in the centre of each patty with your thumb before grilling. This prevents the patty from puffing up in the middle as it cooks, giving you a flat, even burger.

Don’t press them on the grill. Resist the urge to press the patty down with a spatula — you’re just squeezing out all the precious juices.

Topping Suggestions

These chipotle patties pair beautifully with sharp cheddar, pepper jack, or smoked gouda. For toppings, think chipotle mayo, crispy bacon, sliced avocado or guacamole, pickled jalapeños, and a handful of crisp lettuce. Serve on toasted brioche buns for the full experience.
